Say which device you have, its version of iOS or iPadOS, and the book, if it's about one. We read everything, and reply as soon as we can.
The app
Version 1.0
For iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 or later, including iPhone Duo.
Reading aloud
- Hear a book
- Open it and tap any sentence. It reads from there, marking each word, and turns the pages as it goes. Tap the play button to pause.
- Change the voice or speed
- Tap the voice's name, or the speed, either side of the play button.
- Find your place again
- Turned the page by hand while it reads? Tap Jump back to return to the voice. Or Back to page, to go back to where you were.
- With the screen locked
- It keeps reading. Pause it, or skip back or ahead a sentence, from the Lock Screen, Control Center or your headphones.
Your library
- Add a book
- Tap Add a book (+ on iPhone) and choose EPUB, PDF or text files, several at once if you like. Or open a book in Mind's Ear from Files, Mail or Safari, or drag books onto the app on iPad.
- Remove a book
- Tap the × on its cover.
- Move to a new device
- Your books aren't uploaded anywhere, so add them again from the original files in Files or iCloud Drive.
The page
- Fonts, size and colours
- Tap Aa for the reading settings: Literata, Geist or OpenDyslexic, the text size, a white, cream, green or black page, and the margins.
- Contents
- Tap the list button for the book's contents, or to go to a page number.
- Highlight or copy
- Press and hold a word, drag to the end of the passage (or drag its handles), then choose a colour, or Copy. Press and hold a highlight to change its colour or remove it. Your highlights are under Contents › Highlights.
- Close a book
- Swipe down on the page, or tap the back button.
The subscription
- What's free
- The four books the app comes with read aloud free, always. Reading any book, your library and every setting are free too.
- Restore a purchase
- In About (the ⓘ in the library), tap Restore Purchases, signed in with the Apple Account you subscribed with.
- Cancel
- Settings › your name › Subscriptions, or About › Manage Subscription in the app. Cancel at least 24 hours before it renews.
- Refunds
- Apple handles payments and refunds: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Is it free?
Yes, to download and to read with. The four books it comes with read aloud free, always, and you can read any book, and use your library and every reading setting, without paying. To hear the books you add, there's Mind's Ear Annual: $14.99 a year, with a 7-Days Free Trial if you haven't had one.
Does it need the internet?
No. The voice is made on your iPhone or iPad, by a speech model that comes with the app, so it reads aloud in airplane mode, on the underground or in the middle of nowhere. The app goes online only to reach the App Store, for the subscription.
Which books can it read?
EPUB, PDF and plain-text books, from Files, iCloud Drive, Mail, Safari's downloads, or anywhere else you keep them. Books with DRM, such as those bought from Apple Books or Kindle, can't be opened: Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and many publishers sell or give away books without it.
Which languages does it read?
English. Of the 54 voices, 28 are American and British English, and 26 more read English with a Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese or Mandarin accent.
Can I highlight and copy?
Yes. Press and hold a word, then drag to the end of the passage, and choose aqua, pink, orange, yellow or green, or Copy. Press and hold a highlight to change its colour or remove it. Every highlight is listed in Contents, under Highlights, to go back to. It's all kept on your device.
Does it keep reading with the screen locked?
Yes. Lock your phone, put it in your pocket, and it reads on. Pause it, or skip back or ahead a sentence, from the Lock Screen, Control Center or your headphones. It pauses for calls, and when your headphones come out.
What happens to my books?
They stay on your device. There's no account, nothing is uploaded, and the app has no analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind. Keep the original files in Files or iCloud Drive to add them on another device.

iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later, including iPhone Duo, where it opens like a book. It works with VoiceOver and the largest text sizes.
How do I cancel the subscription?
In Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Mind's Ear Annual. Or open About in the app (the ⓘ in the library), and tap Manage Subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial or the year ends and you won't be charged again.
