Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
CHAPTER I. Down the Rabbit-Hole
AA

CHAPTER I.
Down the Rabbit-Hole

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice “without pictures or conversations?”

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

On your shelf from the start

Four classics, read aloud free. Always.

Open the app and there's a library waiting, each book opening where its story starts. Then add as many of your own as you like.

  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll
  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Arthur Conan Doyle
  • Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum

How it works

From page to voice in a tap

No setup, no account and nothing to download after the app itself. The voice comes with it.

  1. 1

    Add a book

EPUB, PDF or plain text, from Files, Mail or Safari. Or drag a stack of them onto your iPad at once.

  2. 2

    Tap a sentence

It reads from there, lighting up each word as it's spoken, and turning the pages as it goes.

  3. 3

    Listen anywhere

Lock your phone and put it in your pocket. Pause or skip from your headphones or the Lock Screen.

Every word, lit as it's spoken

Follow along, look away, or come back: the highlight always shows where the voice is, and the pages turn with it.

“Curiouser and curiouser!” cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English).

Reads on with the screen locked

The book and chapter on your Lock Screen, with play, pause and skip.

Chapter I
The Cyclone

Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife. Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles. There were four walls, a floor and a roof, which made one room; and this room contained a rusty looking cookstove, a cupboard for the dishes, a table, three or four chairs, and the beds.

Every screen

Made for the device in your hand

Not one layout stretched to fit, but one for each: a book in your pocket, a spread on your iPad, and on iPhone Duo, a book that opens.

Two pages, side by side

  • Turn it sideways for a two-page spread, like a printed book
  • Turn pages with a keyboard or trackpad, or drop books onto it from Files
  • Open several books, each in a window of its own

Private by design

Your books never leave your device.

Many read-aloud apps send what you read to a server for their best voices. Mind's Ear makes its voice right on your iPhone or iPad, so what you read stays between you and the page.

Questions

Asked and answered

Is it free?

Yes, to download and to read with. The four books it comes with read aloud free, always, and you can read any book, and use your library and every reading setting, without paying. To hear the books you add, there's Mind's Ear Annual: $14.99 a year, with a 7-Days Free Trial if you haven't had one.

Does it need the internet?

No. The voice is made on your iPhone or iPad, by a speech model that comes with the app, so it reads aloud in airplane mode, on the underground or in the middle of nowhere. The app goes online only to reach the App Store, for the subscription.

Which books can it read?

EPUB, PDF and plain-text books, from Files, iCloud Drive, Mail, Safari's downloads, or anywhere else you keep them. Books with DRM, such as those bought from Apple Books or Kindle, can't be opened: Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and many publishers sell or give away books without it.

Which languages does it read?

English. Of the 54 voices, 28 are American and British English, and 26 more read English with a Spanish, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese or Mandarin accent.

Does it keep reading with the screen locked?

Yes. Lock your phone, put it in your pocket, and it reads on. Pause it, or skip back or ahead a sentence, from the Lock Screen, Control Center or your headphones. It pauses for calls, and when your headphones come out.

What happens to my books?

They stay on your device. There's no account, nothing is uploaded, and the app has no analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind. Keep the original files in Files or iCloud Drive to add them on another device.
